Movie Review: SOLO – A Star Wars Story!

“You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon? It made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs!”

[100% Spoiler Free] – A young Han Solo before he became an infamous smuggler and joined the Rebel Forces! A heist movie/crime caper/action adventure all rolled up in one. Alden Erhenreich plays Han Solo to perfection. All the rugged charm, disarming wit, and easygoing demeanor is there. The immensely talented Donald Glover is super smooth as Lando Calrissian ๐Ÿ™‚ Best of all, it features the legendary Kessel Run! What more can you ask for? ๐Ÿ˜€

FULL REVIEW [Spoilers like a mofo!]

First of all, let’s get one damn thing clear – ‘Solo’ is NOT a flop! Box office be damned – This movie is both a good standalone -AND- part of the Star Wars Saga story line (Saga). It’s not as dark as ‘Rogue One‘ and not as lofty as ‘Last Jedi‘. It is a perfect Han Solo movie.

Remember, since we first met Han (Mos Eisley Cantina, Episode IV) he was all about getting paid $$$! Han was no hero. Never wanting anything more than the next job and constantly on the run (Jaba, anyone?)ย  That attitude is explored in his early life. Turns out Han grew up a street rat along with his childhood girlfriend Qi’Ra (Emelia Clarke) and wanted nothing more than to find his place in the world.

Along the way, the two get separated, Han joins the Empire’s galactic army (yep), and eventually meets Chewbacca! From there the movie kicks into caper-mode, as Han teams up with a band of thieves led by Woody Harrellson. Their mission: Steal coaxium, the most coveted mineral in the galaxy…a ‘hyper fuel’ made ofย hypermatter (a derived sort of anti-matter, but more powerful). And yes folks, this is the Kessel Run! The job that Han Solo has been bragging about completing in 12 parsecs! lol lol – It is INSANE! ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

Of course, stealing this mineral requires a a crazy plan and a fast ship. That’s where Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) comes in! From here, the fun kicks into high gear ๐Ÿ™‚ – seriously, is there anything this guy cannot do??

Overall, Han Solo’s movie stays true to character. Like the man himself, the movie never takes itself seriously even in the face of danger. Alden Erhenreich plays Han perfectly as a rebirth of Harrison Ford – (who himself LOVES this movie!). Donald Glover channels Billy Dee Williams in all his smoooove Colt45 glory lol – as young Lando ‘gotta rock my capes!’ Calrissian.

This is a perfect Han Solo movie and I kinda want to see more – specifically his Jabba the Hutt spice run which went badly!

I give it 4 out of 5 Falcons.

And now we gotta talk about this….

the return of DARTH MAUL!!!ย

Folks this is HUGE! For hardcore fans who watched Star Wars: The Clone Wars Animated Series – we know that Darth Maul survived being cut in half by Obi Wan and later recovered his legs and powers. We ALSO know that Chancellor Palpatine (aka the Emperor Darth Sidious) did NOT kill him but rather tortured him and took him back.

Darth Maul’s gratuitous cameo can be viewed one of TWO ways – it either works and is the NEW timeline from now on (kinda like X-Men: Days of Future Past), or it doesn’t work at all.

IT DOESN’T WORK:ย The main problem with including Darth Maul is continuity issues. For those who don’t know – Darth Maul died…TWICE! (more on that below) By bringing his character back, Disney is tampering with a timeline that has (for the most part) worked out well over different mediums.

Bringing back Darth Maul as shocking cameo was AMAZING but simply doesn’t fit into the classic timeline of events. His story arc largely takes place before/during Phantom Menace, a rebirth/revenge comeback during Star Wars: Clone Wars Animated Series, and wrapped up with climactic battle in Star Wars: Rebels (in which Obi-Wan kills him AGAIN). Unless they try to ret-con and shoehorn him in. Otherwise, he has no place in the upcoming story arc (Vader, the Empire, rise of the Rebellion, Luke). As excited as I was to see him – it’s a hot mess. Disney will have some ‘splaining to do!

I’m a fan of keeping great villains alive. We’ve already seen Darth Maul survive being sliced in half – why couldn’t he survive another lightsaber wound? I mean….we don’t exactly SEE him die?

Plus, thisย means that Disney completely takes the reigns of Star Wars continuity! Disney can tap into source materials throughout the Star Wars Extended Universe (EU), which includes novels and animated series – namely The Clone Wars and Rebels. There are plenty of AWESOME characters to explore like Crimson Dawn, Cad Bane, Asaaj Ventress, young Boba Fett, the Mandalorians – andย maybe, just maybe a surprise appearance by one Ahsoka Tano aka Snips?! ๐Ÿ˜€ (Again…we don’t exactly SEE her die in ‘Rebels?)

Disney needs to tread carefully. This could upset the delicate balance of The Force of the Saga timeline. If Disney does this they need to go 100%. There are enough holes in the EU to fill in with smaller projects – BUT — this means the new stories need to be both independent of the original Saga. A lot of Clone Wars characters are presumed displaced once the Empire kicked in, but it IS possible they survived. ๐Ÿ˜‰

If that is the case, then this Solo movie Darth Maul cameo just opened a HUGE opportunity for Disney to feature never-ending Star Wars stories.

Movie Review: HEREDITARY…..[100% Spoiler Free!]

You Are Not Prepared.

The world is about to be divided between two groups:

Those who will watch ‘Hereditary’ – And everybody else.

Those of us who watch this waking nightmare will be talking about it for years. Decades, even. Among horror classics like The Exorcist. I’m not saying its as good as The Exorcist, or even as scary. But…it is scary as fuck. It is deeply disturbing and in some cases just flat-out WRONG. And it is now a part of horror movie legacy.

Hereditary begins with a grandmother dying and the residue of her life that she leaves behind with her family. There are early signs of family woes, frustrations, guilt, shame and anguish. There is enough tension in the air to stifle your breathing. Things get weirder as the mom suffers from depression, anxiety, and possible mental illness (or, does she?).

From here the movie delivers several helpings of “WTF“, and slowly but steadily twists that knife into your psyche for the next 2 hours. I’m not saying ANYTHING else about it except…as a horror movie, Hereditary moves directly to the head of the class, jumping over everything we’ve seen before. There is nothing else like it.

Here’s how unsettling this movie is: I watch scary movies year-round, Dozens annually. I’ve seen hundreds in my lifetime. I felt…BAD after watching this. I needed a shower. I needed to feel good about something in life. stopped to grab my favorite ice cream. I went home and binged episodes of The Office. I needed to laugh and forget what I just saw. I fell asleep with my light on. :-/

I saw this movie out of excitement with my horror podcast co-host. We THOUGHT we had the movie figured out 2/3rds of the way in. Turns out we were wrong. When it was all said and done, we just kind of looked at each other to see who would talk first.

I think I said, Well, FUCK. WOW….’ :-/

I felt dirty, like something nasty brushed across my soul and I needed to scrub it off.ย  My podcast buddy said he would go see it again just for “shits and giggles. mostly shits”ย (his actual words). I replied that ONCE was enough for me lol.ย  I saw what I needed to see and I saw stuff I wouldn’t mind NEVER seeing again.

As for rating the movie? 4 stars? 5 stars?

This is one of the rare moments when I’m not rating a movie.

You can either see it – or not. it’s totally up to you.ย If you are a horror movie fan you HAVE to see this movie. It is the movie we will be talking about for a very long time.

For the rest of humanity, I will say that you’ll be fine if you never see it.

Some things cannot be un-seen.
