Let The Right One In (2008)- movie review and trailer.

Låt den rätte komma in

DO yourself a favor – go see this movie if you can.

One of the best vampire movies I’ve seen in a loooong time!  This joint was the fan favorite at Austin’s own FANTASTIC FEST 2008 and is already a cult-classic. It’s playing in limited theaters but is well worth the big screen viewing.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is a Swedish movie about 12-yr old Oskar, a boy who is tormented by school bullies – and Eli – a mysterious 12-yr old girl who recently moves next door to him. Without giving anything away – Oscar befriends Eli. Eli teaches Oscar how to stand up for himself. They fall in love with each other.

And Eli turns out to be a vampire.

The results are horrific, touching, and sometimes comedic.

The mark of a great film is its watchability – and I definitely wanted to re-watch this one as soon as it ended!

This movie is simply perfect in its mood, its pacing, the atmosphere and texture…. so much so that the Swedish subtitles become second nature. While the story unfolds, the crispness of the snowy landscapes, the darkness of night, the sounds of the schoolyard, the menace of the bullies –  all of these elements hold your attention and make for great viewing. And oh yeah….people start dying off left and right.

LTROI – in my opinion – is just shy of a masterpiece. It tells a simple story of two lonely souls combined with vampire movie. A movie like this could be made in Hollywood. It is altogether way too clever, too engaging, very well-paced, charming, menacing, and bloody – but thoroughly entertaining. It has no blaring soundtrack, no overhype, no tie-ins to a million-selling novel, no quick-style editing, and its not loaded with pretty teen-aged faces.

Just 2 excellent child actors, a chilling secret, and enough blood and gore to satisfy…

– AND a killer ending!

Definitely in my Top Ten of Vampire movies. :o)

Grade: A;  4 1/2 stars
